Catching Fireflies – Let’s catch it all!

Let’s Catch It All!

“In the summer evenings, fireflies swarm around the tarn, making something hateful almost beautiful”

-Bethany Griffin, The Fall-

A Sweet Beginning…

Hi!

Catching Fireflies is a song that first started when I went to a local beach called “Ocean Queen” together with my parents, sisters and my bigger family such as grandma, aunties, cousin, and especially, my uncle who recently passed away. We went on the day before my social studies exam started. It was a three hours ride to Ocean Queen from my place and another three hours. We spent almost the whole day by the beach, enjoying the sun, eating local seafood, visiting our plantation, and playing together.

As the day becomes late, I entered a forest beside the ocean. This is where the song started. The forest seemed very magical. The uplifting mood that was set by my family on the day really made me motivated and excited to somehow enter the forest and look at the magical features of it. One of this feature is the beautiful bright fireflies everywhere. They were so magical that we did not need flashlights at all. It was an unforgettable moment to be in.

I wrote lyrics first after entering the jungle inside my car. On the way home, I ponder or reflect on what I really did and how magical the moment in the jungle was with the fireflies. The way home are also very inspiring, with stages and stages of farms and plantations. On the other hand, I knew that the next day was exams; something that all students are not really happy with. With that mixture of emotion, I was able to relate the fireflies to dark moments of teenagers. This dark moment can be interpreted differently, would that be peer pressure, homework, girlfriend, family matters, etc.

However, Catching Fireflies is more than simply about exams. Catching Fireflies is a metaphor that life is certainly not the worst thing. In fact, it is a gift. The bad things that happen in life is the hardships, trials and tribulations that everyone must experience to finally feel joy and peace. A firefly is a metaphor of those who can help you pass this hardship smoothly. They are like angels that guide you through it. The message of this song to the audience is for them to embrace moments of hardships and experience it with full concentration, and a thought that you can pass through this and feel peaceful at the end.

Here is the original and final version of the track. Imagine that you are in Ocean Queen, setting the fires, and turning the radio to listen to the piano instrumental of this song. Imagine that you are singing this, without fear, but confidence and love.

Lyrics:

Tonight  is hard to believe,
But truth is turning grim,
We’re lost together
In the dawn,
of a moribund light.

But tonight
We’re catching fireflies
To light our hopes
And guide us through
Cuz we are dark,
No light can burst from us,
But through their help
We can go home.

It hurts to think that our light’ve gone away,
of the choices that went through,
Our bulbs have rusted in the dark
It’s like no hopes allowed.

But tonight
We’re catching fireflies
To light our hopes
And guide us through
Cuz we are dark,
No light can burst from us,
But through their help
We can go home.

But tonight
We’re catching fireflies
To light our hearts
And guide us through
Cuz they are armies,
That will fight for us
And through their help
We can go home.

Shout out to my Best Friend Jay!

Jason Bharwani, a singer who started from zero, to hero of the community. I have seen him grow into the musician he is now. We created charity concerts for those in need, donated our musical profit, and keep making the community a better place. He agreed to sing this song because of what he thought it can do to the community; to enlighten the community of love. He believed in this song that will help the community understand that life and love combined together is amazing.

Conceptual Meanings of the Lyrics

The first and second verse talks about how the night is very depressing and that we are lost in a declining presence of light. It shows that in this world, there are worries that we fear and live by. However, the chorus goes on the counter of verse 1, because there are fireflies to catch and that will light our hopes, guide us and make us feel safer in this depressing, dark world. It shows that we are a dark person with pessimistic attitudes, but with the help of these fireflies we can go home. There are some religious implications put into this, in that this shows that we all sin, and that if we sin, there just seems like there is no hope to go back to heaven. But, with the help of these fireflies, or the good people which will support us, we can get back on track and repent. The last chorus has a little tweak in the lyric, from “light our hopes” to “light our hearts”. This is because we are no longer dark, like said in the chorus before. We have fully repented and become cleansed and awakened of our dark life. Being bright and no longer dark is also emphasized in “cuz we are dark” being changed to “cuz they are armies that will fight for us”, “And” through their help, we can go home. Changing the “but” to an “and” in the second chorus underlies the significance of being transformed already and not making the last two lines of the chorus a counter of what we as a dark person could actually do. Going home means going to heaven peacefully, and this song transformed from a dark mood to a bright mood because we succeed in catching these fireflies and going home.

Recording Process

It took us only a day to record it. However, the editing process takes around 5 days. Everything should be in the way that I wanted it to be. This is because the effects are very important to emphasize on the message I want to give to the audience. Yes, I had to empathize with the audience when editing it, so that what I edited in the studio is not too much of simply what I want. I targeted this song to the young generations, because mostly, the young ones like me are usually the one that are prone to fall into these kinds of conflicts. We recorded only with the piano and vocal. I went to ocean queen and simply find a natural area that I can loop for the background effect.

Here is the Sheet Music: Catching Fireflies

I believed that I have captured the magical moment that happened in Ocean Queen through how the music sound. With chromatic scales and some unusual chord progressions, it will feel like you are in the woods looking at how the fireflies move their wings and how their wings would sound in a close distance. The very often changing of clefs also show how these fireflies move very inconsistently and fast, trying to help us here and there. Lastly, the changing time signature really captures what I felt there, which is that time was endless and unrestricted to simply the seconds we know. It felt like forever, in a very good way. Everything that is learnt in this course from the recording stages to music theories all helped out to a large extent!

For my Beloved Uncle…

This song is dedicated to my uncle, Denny, who passed away this year. He is the best singer I will ever have listened to. He is the biggest mentor for my musical career. He really loves everyone, but at most times, I, myself, have never showed the love back.  I feel guilty. We have never even taken a picture. His contribution to making me as a musician is infinite. He may not be liked in my family or maybe in the community, but he cares for everyone. He loves everyone and wants the best for everyone. I used to call him my most annoying uncle when he supported me and cheer me up in concerts. Now, as I know that I regretted to have not shown my maximum love to him when he was alive, this song will show my deepest love for him. I am sorry. I am proud to call you, my beloved uncle.

To all who is reading this, I hope that this song can really inspire you to go to those of your family members or people in the community whom you hate and love them whilst they are still here with us in this very world. The people whom you hate, especially in your family, might actually have a very very sincere compassion towards you. They are your fireflies that will guide you. You have to catch them. Not let them go. I hope this message can really get into your hearts, and you won’t make the same mistake as I do… Let this song be one of your motivation to end up in an amazing note to each and every member of your family and the community, who will guide you as your fireflies. Let’s catch it all! I love you all…
