Why I’m doing this project:
I have found, both through my research on the subject and my prior knowledge of the matter from the media and pop culture, that the historical overlap of issues of LGBT groups and their struggle to attain equality with the rich cultural background of the city of LA is very significant in that it raises some integral issues pertaining to the identity of the LGBT movement both in its role as an extension of the civil society of the United States and as a facet of the universal international move towards social equality.
Introduction to LGBTQIA+ in LA:
The issue I am presenting about in the Catalyst Conference is that of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transexual, Queer, Intersex, Asexual and other related groups (also referred to as the LGBTQIA+ movement), with a specific focus on their history and participation in the intrinsic fabric of the city of LA in reference to the United States and the world at large. The LGBTQIA+ and its history as a wide ranging movement has faced many struggles and achieved many milestones globally, many of which occurred within LA such as the first widescale pride parades, marches, and even violent police raids on their bars, clubs and meeting areas. I intend to explore their rich and complex history within the context of Los Angeles and the ethical and social ramifications on these groups and their members throughout the years.
Why is this project important?
The issue, as stated previously, is, in my view, highly important not only for the citizens of LA to appreciate the diverse culture of their home but also for members of the international LGBTQIA+ community to fully understand and acknowledge the role this city has played in shaping the propagation and growth of the advocacy for the movement for their rights and their interests. I think that it is essential to promote awareness of the harm done to these groups in the past and the struggles they faced to attain the recognition and respect they currently enjoy so as to comprehend the difficulty and tragedy of such a subject and safeguard the rights of marginalized groups everywhere.
How can we act to promote change?
I think the best strategy to truly catalyze change, other than generally spreading the word and raising awareness on these issues, is to promote the issue on an international platform with as many potential learners as possible so as to hopefully inspire others within the international community to push for the protection and safeguarding of the basic rights of these groups and to constantly ensure that the community and society at large is made aware of their struggle so as not to forget to acknowledge them and their entitlements within society. I think, more specifically, this project should act to encourage these groups to speak out and to further explore their history, giving them more pride and comfort with their identities by helping them learn some interesting factoids about the origins of the civil rights advocates and leaders who pushed for their acceptance within wider society. This is mainly why I will be emphasizing on the contacting of influential groups, clubs, and advocacy movements representing the LGBTQIA+ community in popular meeting areas for them that are relatively progressive such as newer parts of the city of LA and also many college campuses, as I feel the youth would be more adept at utilizing such new technology and spreading the word within the general community so as to accomplish the purposes of such an application and project.
App-LGBTQIA+ of LA Map:
This project is a useful resource for members of the LGBTQIA+ community and those interested in their movement to find information and learn interesting anecdotes and factoids about the history of the group in relation to the history of LA and the US as a whole. It includes hotels, bars, clubs, meeting areas and other establishments with ties to the history of the LGBTQIA+ movement and some key landmarks where the movement reached its milestones (such as the first notable gay rights parade). It also offers a comprehensive list of research articles that go into more depth on the ethical and social implications of the LGBTQIA+ and their struggle in the context of the history of LA as a city.
The issue of the LGBTQIA+ is one that has long permeated the atmospheres of social and political discourse in LA along with the rest of the United States and many locations worldwide. LGBTQIA+ is an abbreviation for the community and movement supporting the rights of Lesbian, Gays, Bisexuals, Transexuals, Intersex and Asexual groups.
The location I will be covering with my app is LA. LA is the common abbreviation for the city known as Los Angeles, which is located in the state of California on the eastern coast of the United States of America. Los Angeles is home to a rich pantheon of cultural idols and a great amount of racial, ethnic and social diversity.
- How do they link?
The LGBTQIA+ movement and its many earlier strands, including the primordial. Gay Rights movement of the 1960s and 70s, had much of its history, specifically the components of its history most associated to that of the United States of America, occur within LA or the general LA area. This includes many of the first Gay Rights marches, police raids on LGBT meeting areas and other historically significant events often happening in many of the major landmarks of Los Angeles that are featured and discussed in the App.

How can this app help the project’s goals?
I feel strongly that by giving members of this wide community a platform upon which to explore the often suppressed history of the movement, the app can provide users with a way of identifying strongly and affirming their shared history, specifically in LA which is often cited as a progressive landmark of the LGBTQIA+ movement. As such, I would hope that this application could help start a mature dialogue pertaining to the complex intertwining fabric of the shared histories of these groups and worldwide, with emphasis on the responses of government and state institutions such as police to the activities of victims of the LGBTQIA+ attacks and abuse.
