Nurseries- Care for the Kids


THE IMPORTANCE OF NURSERIES

Child care can be argued as the most important thing in a child’s life because the quality and experiences in a child’s first five years ultimately determines the success of the person. The child care industry is important on so many levels, because it not only shapes and develops each child, it increases the workforce because it helps the parents go to and stay at work. We know that whatever we put into the child care industry, we will get out of it by the success of each person, which is why it is such a crucial thing to keep up to date, and have good quality programs.


WESTMINSTER’S TULL HALL

The purpose of an on-campus nursery makes it easier for faculty and staff to drop off, and later pick up their kid while they are going to work, without them having to go out of the way to leave their child at daycare. At my school, it is such a useful perk for new moms and dads having the Tull Hall Westminster Nursery, and it should be a space where they feel comfortable leaving their kids in a good an environment, rather than an old, dark, and dingy building with some play toys. Currently, the nursery at Westminster is a small L-shaped building, with two small floors for the child care centers, while the Georgia Academy of Music uses the third floor. The space is crammed between sharing the floors for two polar opposite purposes, so there is no functionality within the building. However, because child care proves to be a very important production, the space should be improved to create an environment worth educating and developing kids in. 


MY PROJECT

DESCRIPTION

Within my architecture class with Global Online Academy, I have created a design of the Westminster Tull Hall nursery that could be an updated, more functional, and spacious area. Because the range of users vary from infants and small children, to adults working there, and parents picking up, the space needs to function for everyone who uses it. I designed a building with more of a modern style to go along with the upcoming renovation’s on my school’s campus, and to also add character and charm to the space. Through my process of design, I went through stages of pre-design, schematic design, and design development:

1) pre-design– gather information of current site, perform interviews, research case studies, analyze site, bubble diagrams, create data sheets. 

2) schematic design– sketch of the layout, floor plans, site plans, elevation plans, make 3D model.

3) design development– final site plans, floor plans, elevation plans, and sketch-up design.

INSPIRATION

Frank Gehry is an American architect, and I have been drawn to his style of architecture because of its unique bends, curves, and mix of materials. I wanted to incorporate some of his curved style into my work on the nursery to add a little bit more character to my building . I achieved this by creating a bent roof, which serves the purpose of drawing in people to the site.

It turns out 36% of all children in the United States are not enrolled in a full-time nursery program, which means that millions of children are not receiving the child care they need to develop properly and mature. Also, some of the 64% that are enrolled might be apart of a poor facility or an unacceptable environment for children to be in. That’s why I believe by increasing the status and quality of the child care programs we have, it will continue to positively effect the world as we know it.

    Based on your research and my previous knowledge, it sounds like we’re up for an institutional change to make access to early childhood care more accessible. How do you think governments, local or national, could implement plans similar to yours?
