Project OASIS: Speculating Isolation

This project is a requirement of the GOA Abnormal Psychology Course. Using the process of design thinking, a challenge in the world of mental health was identified, interviews and research were undertaken, and a solution prototype was developed. Below you will find information about the identified area of concern and my proposed solution. BACKGROUND:

“All mental disorders leads to┬ápeople being pulled away from others.” That quote was an important piece during my interview with the high school psychologist. From there, I completely agree as it is one of the real reasons of how I ended up in this position. From a mind who’s diagnosed with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), it is truly difficult for me to socialize with others especially when it comes to making friends. It is a struggle I had from the past, but even if I felt that I passed through that barrier as of now, it may come back to me at another time.

In school, I always look into the SAS (Singapore American School) High School community like this. There are two different groups of people. The first is what I like to call the “majority” which consists of people who like to collaborate in and out of class. And then there’s the “minority” which consists of people who prefer to work in and out of class in a state of solitude.


THE CHALLENGE:

From this project, I was able to identify several challenges from the feedback that was given from my class and teachers. Identifying the real issue or the root of the cause is one particular challenge that I found. As my project involves interviewing certain people, chances are that one person’s reason will be different from the other. Another relates towards consent, as there are chances when he/she isn’t really confident enough to share their personal insights.


THE SOLUTION:

This is one of the forms that is currently work-in-progress for those who are not up to the interview part of my project. As I mentioned previously, this project revolves around interviewing other people.

Recently, I have been thinking of creating posters that similarly reflects on what the participants answered in the forms. Design-wise, it is in a similar form of anti-bullying posters which show the deeper understanding of a victim’s reason. A sample down here is one of the anti-bullying posters that I plan to create as part of my reflection on my project:

WHAT’S NEXT?

One of the objectives of PROJECT OASIS is to really speculate or find the deeper meaning to what is the cause of someone striding off into solitude. Although it may seem to me that covered the ground that I need to look into, I believe there are still some areas that I might have missed. To me, OASIS is a perfectly creative acronym which displays the process. But is there really other ways to find out the understanding of solitude? How might we reflect it without exposing the personal truth?
