How can everyone lower their carbon footprint in the simplest way possible?

Video Introduction

The Problem

In today’s society, many people are aware of the increasingly difficult challenge of Climate Change. No matter what side you agree with on the issue, its a large topic up for discussion on every countries agenda. Now more than ever, people have began to fight for what they believe in and climate activists all over the world have began protesting more and more to save our beautiful planet. Many people from home want to make a difference but don’t exactly know how to go about it. A lot of people can’t necessarily just buy solar panels in order to switch to renewable energy or buy a telsa to lower their carbon footprint. That is why I created ClimateTipsToday.

ClimateTipsToday is exactly what it sounds like, a social media page that posts daily tips to help everyone lower their carbon footprint even if the task is minuscule. Through market research, it was easy to tell that I would receive the most traction on Instagram because of the increasing amount of people using it and the tools they have to help organizations. Although many of these tips are quite small, if more and more people continue to follow and share my page, the more we will be helping the earth.

Project Drawdown is an organization that does this on a global and significantly larger scale. They have lists of solutions from transportation to agriculture that go in depth on how they could shift the way both people perceive this issue and how people act upon it.

Project Drawdown: A solution on a different scale

Although Drawdown is working to eliminate carbon emissions, there are many more organizations that they work with to help make this dream a reality. Throughout my research, its clear to see that in order to make a difference in the world, getting the attention of national leaders in crucial. The Paris Agreement of 2017 was a huge stride in the right direction, but there are still many national powerhouses that overlook this crisis. With enough people backing the movement, we can change policy by electing people that stand for what you believe in.

Climate Tips Today

The goal of CTT is to attract to people from all walks of life, whether that be a teen just learning the importance of Climate Change or a professor simply trying to reduce their carbon footprint. For each post, I use the least amount of text that I can in order to make the image as simple and as easy to understand as possible. I have access to so many templates and so many colors that I could do this forever. The images are intended to be simple and easy to read so that they will catch the audiences eye and immediately draw them in. Once they read the picture, the caption will explain how they can help and what they have to do.

There will be many ways to receive the daily tips but for now all of the tips are accessed through the Instagram page. The tips are posted between 6pm and 7pm EST which is 10pm to 11pm UTC. Once a base following has been established, we will transition into other platforms to make it more accessible for everyone.

What is next for CTT?

Below is a poll to help me get a grasp of what people think would be the most beneficial direction to move in.

Hi Thomas! I think this is a great idea to reach out to people and help them act on climate change even if it is in small ways. Besides these daily tips, have you thought of other ways to spark conversation and awareness of climate change around your community? And how are you promoting your Instagram page?

Tommy, this addresses a real problem – how do we make a difference? — and I am so grateful for your thoughtful engagement in this work. Love that you connected what you learned in your entrepreneurship class to what you learned in this class. I am now up on ClimateTipsToday and look forward to learning more, and will share it with my friends — you already have 52 followers which is great! Perhaps one day’s climate tip could be “Let’s talk about it” asking your followers to share the site with a friend (or two!) Thanks, Tommy!

Hi Thomas! This is a really great idea, and I hope that it gains a lot of traction. I know I’m always trying to find simple ways to be greener, so as long as you can keep content coming, this will be an incredible resource. I love that you have already taken direct action to help the problem by creating an Instagram page, which is a very good way to get information out. I followed your Instagram and each post is very stylish and enjoyable to read. Amazing work!

Hey Thomas! I think it’s really great that you’re spreading awareness of how important it is that we acknowledge the importance of addressing climate change. I also think that your instagram will be very helpful by providing tips on how to reduce a carbon footprint, especially because the tips you’re giving are things that many people look to find but aren’t usually sure what to do with. I was wondering if you had any ideas for feedback when it came to your Instagram page. Would you consider having people submit their own tips or ask questions that you would be able to provide tips for?

Hi Thomas! Wow, I really like this project. I’m very interested in ways to play my part to reduce global warming; however, I definitely struggle with knowing what’s most effective (which is actually why I clicked on your page in the first place). I like your response a lot because I think it can be very effective and it makes it easier for lots of people to play their part. I will definitely be following CTT on Instagram and following the tips. I like how you made sure to think about the readers by decreasing the amount of text and only including what’s necessary. What other platforms would you hope to expand this to later on?

Hi Thomas! What I liked most about your page is your Insta account because the posts you have are well designed and have straight forward messages for your followers. I think that it’s an easy way to remind/nudge people to become more eco-friendly. Congratulations!

Thomas, I just finished the poll! Great idea by the way. Also, I love the idea of a social media network to display these tips. I’ll be sure to follow it now. I love how you combined global warming prevention with technology! I loved it!
