As a community, what are some things that we can do to help prevent the amounts of plastic and human provided waste in our oceans?
Plastic in our Oceans
What do we need to know?
There are now 5.25 trillion macro and micro pieces of plastic in our ocean & 46,000 pieces in every square mile of ocean, weighing up to 269,000 tonnes. Every day around 8 million pieces of plastic make their way into our oceans.
Plastic is killing more than 1.1 million seabirds and animals every year. … Additionally, more than 90%of all birds and fish are believed to have plastic particles in their stomach. It’s because plastic breaks up into tiny pieces in the sea, which are then consumed by fish and other sea animals.
-The world’s oceans could be virtually emptied for fish by 2048. A study shows that if nothing changes, we will run out of seafood in 2048.
–More than 1 million seabirds and 100,000 marine animals die from plastic pollution every year.
SO, HOW CAN WE HELP?
-Support plastic bans
-Reduce our use of single-use plastics (eg. plastic water bottles, etc.)
-Recycle the plastics that we do use
-Individually we can participate in or organize beach cleanups, use the recovered plastic for something useful, etc.
My For-Now Proposal
In Savannah, Georgia, I’d like to propose the idea of organizing a beach clean up and getting a group of people together and going on a boat on the Savannah River, cleaning up any plastic we can see in the water or marsh.
This proposal can help to solve Global Goal #14: Life Below Water. (See first link on works cited document)
