How Can we create an Educational and Sustainable Farming Centre?

My Project Statement

Agriculture and Wisconsin are inseparable. Agriculture is a main economic enterprise and something this state known for, making the adverse effects a key issue. Some adverse effects are: fertilizer used on fields causes massive algae blooms on the lakes, destroys ecosystems, shift from family owned farms to large corporations, and the monocultures of these fields leading to issues in the soil. In my design I will address these issues through supporting the vertical farming technique with the 11, 12, and 13 SDGs. Vertical farming provides a way to farm all year, use less acreage, diversify crops, lessen usage of fertilizers, reduce water usage, and continue farming through climate change related shifts. My design will make this knowledge accessible to family farms in Wisconsin.

Pre-Design Process

Users

For this building, Wisconsin farmers, people devoted to the tradition of farming, would be the main users. I would target this building towards family farmers/smaller operations so that they do not go out of business and are able to compete with monopolies/bigger operations. This educational and business building would be used by farmers, workers, produce shoppers, and tourists.

NEEDS

  • An area in the site for traditional farming due to the constrictions of vertical farming at the moment
  • An affordable and plentiful source of energy- solar panels/ wind turbines
  • Tall ceilings
  • Lots of natural light in order to decrease energy consumption
  • Aesthetically pleasing
  • Easy to navigate pathways
  • Materials that are effective in cold winters

I hope you have found my project proposal interesting.

I would value having some feedback, so please do consider these questions and respond in the comments section below

  • Can you think of ways to raise awareness and provide education about “green” and sustainable ways of living in your area – please share below if you can?
  • How do you think we can all make a difference to how we use the environment around where we live and work?
  • Do you think that my design proposals could be implemented in other parts of the world or in other farming situations?
  • What do you think works well in my design proposal and what do you think could be improved upon?

I would appreciate your suggestions.

  1. Hey Grace! Amazing work! I love everything about you model. I love the vertical farming room in particular. I think you chose a very specific problem which is awesome, because you were able to go in-depth with that problem and come up with a very creative and unique solution. You did a great job illustrating all the details and your ideas with this project! Good work!

  2. Hi Grace! Your extensive knowledge of the environmental aspects of farming is very evident in your project! It is great that your design is sustainable and environmentally friendly, while still accessible to smaller farmers rather than large corporations. Your paper 3-D Model is impressive; It is neat and clean, and the viewer can understand the space easily by looking at the photos. Your sketches are also very clean, and I like how your use of horizontal planes in your design mimic the flat, spanning planes of the surrounding geography.

  3. Hey Grace! I really love your project idea and think that you executed it very well! I really like the idea of giving smaller and more local farms the ability to compete with national companies that have far more capital than they do. I think that your idea can be implemented in places all over the world, not just in Wisconsin, to create a more sustainable lifestyle for everyone. Great work!

  4. Hi Grace! I really like how you targeted a particular need in your community so well! Not only will it benefit the environment with the sustainability of your design, but the positive impact on local farms will help the community as a whole! Your 3D models were great and fit so well with the vibe you outlined in your moodboard. Great job!

  5. Hey Grace! Your idea to create a vertical farming system is a super interesting idea that I haven’t heard a lot of people address. Overall your project is very well illustrated with a variety of different designs and visual images. Not only does your structure look functional and effective, but it is aesthetic and nice to look at which is an important part of architecture. Congrats!!
