How does the beauty industry effect the amount of plastic in the ocean and how can we create a company that could change the beauty industry to become more eco-friendly?!

Overview:

Reduced Cosmetics is a way to rebrand the beauty industry in efforts for individuals to understand that items they use on a daily basis could help eliminate the waste that is present on Earth today. One of the main objectives of Reduced Cosmetics is to collaborate with more popular beauty brands, as well as celebrities. In this way it can ensure the public that these products actually work (i.e. how the beauty tools can apply makeup just as well or even better as other brands) and as a result that would secure customers in the effort of eliminating waste in the environment.

Research:

“According to the UN, at least 800 species worldwide are affected by marine debris” in addition to that at least 80% of that litter is plastic.

Each year there is estimated to be about 13 million metric tons of plastic that ends of in the ocean every year.

Besides turtles, each year a million seabirds are killed by plastic waste. Additionally, scientists estimate that about 60% of all seabirds have eaten pieces of plastic and by 2050 that will rise to 99%.

World Contribution to Plastic Waste

China is the country that contributes most there amount of plastic pollution in the ocean. Of the global total China contributes to 28% of it. 10% is Indonesia, 6% the Philippines and Vietnam.

Packaging is the REAL problem!

LADIES, you know your favorite yet shadow pallets, or makeup brushes, or skin care kits, that has a LOT of packaging?! Well SORRY to break it to you but “packaging is the number one contributor to plastic production in the world” and that “packaging accounted for 146 million tonnes of plastic every year!

Fun Fact: The beauty industry creates 120 billion units of packaging every year

The recycling business…

Economist Sarah Teeter stated that “Recyclers can only sustain themselves by recovering and recycling the things that are profitable.” Essentially stating that recycling is like a business therefore only plastic that is clear and white sales. Because of the crazy colors and glitter there is not a way in which makeup packaging could even be recycled more than half of the time.

About Reduced Cosmetics

Reduced Cosmetics is a beauty brand (just like L’oreal, Kylie Cosmetics, etc.) that manufactures products and packaging that is eco-friendly to the environment. This idea began as a result to the persistent marketplace demand for recyclable and more eco-friendly products. Reduced Cosmetics will manufacture products such as the “Bamboo Beauty Blender” (bamboo is degradable and also compassable so it will not harm the ocean) and products such as makeup remover towels instead of beauty wipes. Establishing this company would help lower the insanely high percentages that are shown above from my research so the beauty industry does not largely contribute to harming the environment. Reduced Cosmetics would have a website that people can access to buy products, as well as hopes for it to be featured at stores such as Sephora, Ulta, Target, and many more places.

  • Packaging: packaging is important, therefore in order to prevent the amount of plastic used my company would take items from the landfill or recycling company’s and produce packaging from those found items or bamboo (which is essential because it is compassable).

For now Response.

The beauty industry contributes millions of tones to plastic in the ocean every year. Reduced Cosmetics has packaging that is either made out of plastic from the ocean or plastic-free packaging with a more simple (but visually appealing) design that could attract the audience as well as eliminate the amount of waste that is present in the ocean. Ideas for products would be a bamboo beauty blender, or makeup brushes that are made out of bamboo. I believe that not even just creating a brand, but forcing the beauty industry to take the extra step and use the extra money to help preserve our planet would make a world of a difference and Reduced Cosmetics can change that.

  1. Hi Simone! This page was really informative and helped me learn a lot about how some packaging on our plates is very harmful to the ocean. I also did not know that most makeup packaging is the biggest contributor to waste in the ocean.

  2. Hi Genesis, I love your project because of its approach to radically reducing plastic waste from the cosmetic industry. Your pitch is so positive and proactive: “rebrand the beauty industry in efforts for individuals to understand that items they use on a daily basis could help eliminate the waste that is present on Earth today. . . . .collaborate with more popular beauty brands, as well as celebrities.” You combine solid research (and upsetting stats about the amount of waste plastic coming from the beauty industry), with a super optimistic entrepreneurial approach to addressing the problem! Bravo!
