What are different ways to offset traveling?
Project by Giulia
I study in an expensive school in Curitiba, Brazil, and every other holiday many of my friends travel all around the world, being national or international trips. Most frequently, they all travel by planes, but flights account for around 2.5% of global carbon dioxide production at the moment. So for my project I had the idea to make two infographics, one of them talking about the impacts on the environment of flying everywhere and another talking about carbon off setting, that air travellers can reduce the impact they have on the environment through carbon offsetting their flights. Carbon offsets are voluntary schemes where people can pay to ‘offset’ or make up for the emissions that their flights produce. Later I would do a presentation where I would do a stop motion explaining my topic and referring to the infographics.
By sharing this information can help a lot due to the amount of people that opt to travel by plane during holidays.
What is offsetting?
According to the Environmental Defenders Office, “Offsets are intended to ‘counter-balance’ the environmental impacts of a particular project or activity.” So it is mainly actions that can be made to compensate the emissions that someone has done that consequently has resealed CO2. This can be done directly (planting a tree, composting) or by donating a certain amount of money that will equal the amount of carbon you have released into the environment.
myclimate is one of the companies you can trust. This site provides a calculator to measure how much carbon you have released during some type of transportation. They introduce themselves as: “a partner for effective climate protection – both locally and globally. The Swiss Non-Profit Organisation wants to shape the future together with its partners through consultation, education and climate protection projects. myclimate pursues this as a science-based and business-orientated non-profit organisation.” They provide the opportunity for you to donate a certain amount that will be sent to organisations around the world that will make up for your carbon emitted. You can find everything on their site.
