Maximizing Atlanta’s Bus Stops

TRAFFIC IN ATLANTA AND ITS EFFECTS

Atlanta is known for many things, but most of all, it is known for its awful traffic. Not only is Atlanta traffic among the worst in the country, but also the world. In fact, it is estimated that Atlanta drivers lose 60 hours per year from traffic congestions or delays. The prodigious amount of wasted time due to traffic has many effects on Atlantans including mental, environmental, and even economical. The direst of these three are environmental as Atlanta is ranked number 2 in the US for the most air pollution by vehicles. Due to the increasing amount of time sitting in cars, more and more nitrogen oxide is emitted into the air through the car’s tailpipe thus creating ozone pollution. Atlanta’s poor air quality has resulted in 11% of children in Georgia having asthma which is almost double the national average. The only time this number is improved is when public transportation usage is increased. For example, during the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, when more public transportation was used, the amount of asthma-related emergency visits decreased by 45%! Additionally, public transit is estimated to shave 32% off of time spent in traffic. However, despite public transportation being the only solution to this problem, MARTA, Atlanta’s public transportation, is rarely ever used.

WHY PEOPLE AREN’T USING MARTA?

But why are so many Atlantans turning to driving over public transportation? The answer lies in MARTA, or Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority. For years MARTA has been considered a joke in Atlanta with its stops being filthy and displeasing as well as inaccessible to many people with physical disabilities. Because of this, MARTA is only used as a last resort with the highest usage rates being when highways are closed. Additionally, MARTA is viewed as being unsafe and crime-ridden, however; in the past year, there have been 0 cases of murder or rape and only 42 cases of theft across all of MARTA (bus, train, and parking lots). In fact, MARTA is considered the second safest public transportation across the nation. The problem falls in MARTA stop’s appearance, its dirty and graffiti-covered grey and exposed structure is not welcoming and feels unsafe.

PROJECT STATEMENT

This project aims to reduce traffic and pollution levels in Atlanta by encouraging more people to utilize MARTA, specifically the BRT, through creating a bright, fun, and safe bus stop able to be used by all.

USERS

The aim is to be accessible to all. While the station should be able to be used by anyone, there will be a target demographic on commuting adults, teenagers/ college students, and families in Atlanta.

STEP ONE: RESEARCH

During the research step, I began by looking at current bus stops that might inspire my design. Next, I interviewed potential users of the new design to see their opinions on present-day MARTA and what they would want out of the design. Then I looked deeper into a potential site of a bus stop. Lastly, I compiled a list of needs for the new bus stop design based off of the information I collected above.

STEP TWO: DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

During the design development step, I began forming a design out of the information from the needs analysis. This started with creating a mood board of inspirational images then a bubble diagram which helped organize where aspects should be placed. Next, I did a rough sketch of the general shape of the enclosure. Lastly, I designed a floor plan of the enclosure.

The scale here is 1"=1' and the overall dimensions of the enclosure is 8' by 10'

STEP THREE: FINAL DESIGN

The last step is where I compiled all of my research into a physical design. Which includes a sketch of the elevation, a water color perspective, and a 3D model using SketchUp.
